The Green Revolution: Why Plants Are Vital in Every Design Space
June, 14, 2023
In the realm of design, we often focus on colors, textures, and aesthetics to create visually pleasing spaces. However, there is one crucial element that can elevate any design to new heights: plants. Beyond their intrinsic beauty, plants have an incredible ability to transform spaces, infusing them with life, vitality, and numerous tangible and intangible benefits. In this blog post, we will explore the importance of plants in design spaces and why every designer should embrace the green revolution.
- Enhancing Aesthetics and Natural Appeal:
Plants bring a unique aesthetic charm to any space. Whether it’s the vibrant foliage of tropical plants, the delicate petals of flowers, or the architectural beauty of succulents, they introduce a natural element that evokes tranquility and harmony. Plants can soften hard edges, add depth and dimension, and create focal points in both interior and exterior designs. They have an uncanny ability to breathe life into sterile environments, making them more inviting and appealing to occupants.
- Purifying Indoor Air Quality:
Indoor air quality is a pressing concern in today’s world. Buildings are filled with various pollutants emitted by furniture, paints, cleaning products, and electronic devices. Plants act as natural air purifiers, absorbing harmful gases such as formaldehyde, benzene, and carbon monoxide, while releasing oxygen. They filter out airborne toxins, improving the overall air quality and reducing the risk of respiratory ailments. Introducing plants into interior spaces can significantly contribute to the health and well-being of the occupants.
- Boosting Well-being and Productivity:
Numerous studies have demonstrated the positive impact of plants on human well-being and productivity. Research suggests that the presence of plants can reduce stress levels, improve concentration, and increase productivity by up to 15%. Plants also have a calming effect on individuals, promoting a sense of tranquility and relaxation. Incorporating greenery into workspaces, such as offices or study areas, can create a more pleasant and conducive environment, enhancing overall performance and satisfaction.
- Noise Reduction and Increased Privacy:
Plants possess excellent acoustic properties that can aid in reducing noise levels in busy spaces. They absorb sound waves, act as barriers, and diffuse noise, helping to create a quieter and more serene atmosphere. Additionally, plants can provide privacy by acting as natural screens or dividers, delineating areas without the need for solid walls or partitions. This natural form of separation allows for a sense of openness while maintaining a sense of privacy, especially in open-plan environments.
- Environmental Sustainability:
As designers, we have a responsibility to promote sustainable practices and minimize our ecological footprint. By incorporating plants into our designs, we actively contribute to environmental sustainability. Plants absorb carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas, and release oxygen through the process of photosynthesis, helping to combat climate change. Additionally, they contribute to urban cooling, reduce energy consumption by providing shade, and support biodiversity by attracting pollinators and wildlife.
Plants are not mere decorative elements; they are essential components of any well-designed space. From their visual appeal to their ability to purify the air, enhance well-being, and promote productivity, plants offer a plethora of benefits that cannot be overlooked. As designers, we have the power to transform spaces into vibrant, sustainable, and nurturing environments by incorporating greenery. So, let’s embrace the green revolution and invite nature indoors, making our designs truly harmonious and life-enriching.
Utilization of Space- Master Bathroom
June 5, 2023
In today’s world, where space is often a luxury, interior design has become all about making the most of what we have. Bathrooms, in particular, tend to be on the smaller side, requiring careful planning and innovative solutions. When it comes to the perfect blend of luxury and functionality, a free-standing tub and shower combo can be a game-changer. In this blog post, we will explore some ingenious ways to utilize space while incorporating a free-standing tub and shower, helping you transform your bathroom into a haven of relaxation and style.
- Embrace the Dual-Functionality: One of the key advantages of a free-standing tub and shower combination is its dual functionality. By merging these two elements, you save valuable space and create a seamless flow in your bathroom. To maximize the utilization of the area, consider a wall-mounted shower panel.
- Opt for a Compact Tub: While the allure of a large, luxurious soaking tub is undeniable, it might not be practical in a space-constrained bathroom. Instead, choose a compact free-standing tub that complements the size of your bathroom. Oval or corner tubs are excellent options as they fit snugly into smaller spaces, leaving room for other essential bathroom fixtures.
- Utilize Underutilized Spaces: To maximize space in a bathroom, look for areas that are often overlooked. Corners, for instance, can be transformed into a functional nook for your free-standing tub and shower combo leaving the rest of the bathroom open and uncluttered.
- Smart Storage Solutions: Efficient storage is paramount in any bathroom, especially when you have limited space. Incorporate clever storage solutions that seamlessly integrate with your free-standing tub and shower combo. Consider installing recessed niches or shelves along the shower wall to keep toiletries and bath essentials organized and within reach.
- Go Vertical with Design: When horizontal space is limited, it’s time to think vertically. Opt for tall, slim cabinets or shelving units that take advantage of the vertical space in your bathroom. These storage solutions not only provide additional storage but also draw the eyes upward, creating an illusion of height and openness.
May Week 1 Project Progression- Master Bathroom
May 5, 2023
I am thrilled to share the progress of a recent master bathroom remodel project that I have had the privilege of working on. This particular project was an exciting one as it involved a complete overhaul of the bathroom space to create a more functional and luxurious design.
One of the most significant changes made in this remodel was the stand-up shower. The client had previously expressed their desire for a larger shower space that would offer more room for relaxation and rejuvenation. Our team set out to make their dream a reality.
We started by removing the outdated and cramped shower stall that was previously in place. The new shower space was then designed to be more open, with a frameless glass enclosure that would give the illusion of a more expansive area. We also incorporated a beautiful custom tile design on the walls to add a touch of elegance and visual interest.
To ensure that the shower was as functional as it was beautiful, we added several features that would enhance the overall experience for the client. These included multiple shower heads, a Moen smart shower digital shower controller and two niches for storing bath products. The shower heads were strategically placed to provide an immersive and invigorating experience.
The stand-up shower progress in this master bathroom remodel project has been an incredible. By incorporating a variety of functional and luxurious features, we were able to create a space that not only met but exceeded the clients’ expectations. We look forward to continuing to help our client bring their dream space to life.
Interconnected Interiors
April 24, 2023
Fashion merchandising in a store front and interior design are two interconnected aspects of a retail business. The way a store is designed and decorated can greatly influence the way customers perceive the merchandise and ultimately impact their buying decisions. In order to create a cohesive and engaging shopping experience, fashion merchandisers must work closely with interior designers to ensure that the store’s aesthetics align with the brand’s image and message. This can include elements such as lighting, color scheme, layout, and displays that effectively showcase the clothing and accessories in a visually appealing manner. By combining their expertise, fashion merchandisers and interior designers can create a space that not only attracts customers, but also encourages them to stay longer, explore the merchandise, and ultimately make a purchase.
Choosing an Interior Designer
March 7, 2023
As a designer, I understand that choosing the right professional to work with can be a daunting task for clients. There are many factors to consider, including style, experience, budget, and communication skills. In this blog post, I will share some tips from an interior designer’s standpoint on how to choose the best interior designer for your project.
- Determine your style and project scope
Before starting your search for an interior designer, it’s important to have a clear understanding of your personal style and the scope of your project. Take some time to collect inspiration images and make notes on what you like and don’t like. This will help you communicate your vision to potential designers and ensure that you are on the same page from the beginning.
- Research potential designers
Once you have a clear idea of your project scope and style, it’s time to start researching potential designers. Look for designers who have experience working on similar projects and have a portfolio that showcases their design style. Check their website, social media, and online reviews to get an idea of their reputation and what past clients have said about their work.
- Schedule a consultation
After you have narrowed down your list of potential designers, schedule a consultation with each one. This is an opportunity to meet the designer in person, discuss your project goals, and get a sense of their communication style and approach. Be sure to bring your inspiration images and any other relevant information to the meeting.
- Ask for references
During the consultation, don’t be afraid to ask for references from past clients. A reputable interior designer should be able to provide you with several references who are willing to speak about their experience working with the designer. Reach out to these references and ask about their overall satisfaction with the designer, communication style, and any challenges they faced during the project.
- Consider your budget
When choosing an interior designer, it’s important to consider your budget. Be upfront about your budget from the beginning and ask for a clear breakdown of the designer’s fees and any additional costs associated with the project. A good designer should be able to work within your budget and provide solutions that meet your needs and goals.
- Trust your instincts
Finally, trust your instincts when choosing an interior designer. You should feel comfortable working with the designer and confident in their ability to bring your vision to life. If something doesn’t feel right or you have concerns, it’s better to address them before the project begins.
In conclusion, choosing the right interior designer for your project is an important decision that should not be taken lightly. With the right designer by your side, your interior design project can be a stress-free and enjoyable experience.
Mirrors
February 24, 2023
One of the best ways to add both functionality and aesthetic appeal to a space is by incorporating mirrors. Mirrors can add depth, light, and the illusion of more space, making them an ideal addition to any room!
- Use mirrors to create the illusion of more space. Mirrors can make a room appear larger by reflecting light and creating the illusion of depth. To maximize this effect, place a mirror on a wall opposite a window or in a space that lacks natural light. A floor-length mirror can also make a room appear taller.
- Incorporate mirrors into your furniture design. Mirrored furniture pieces like coffee tables, side tables, and dressers can add both functionality and aesthetic appeal to a room. Mirrored furniture can also add a touch of glamour to a space.
- Use mirrors as artwork! Mirrors can be used as an alternative to traditional artwork. A large statement mirror can be used as a focal point in a room, while smaller mirrors can be grouped together to create a gallery wall.
- Add a mirrored backsplash in the kitchen or bathroom. Mirrored backsplashes are a unique way to add reflective surfaces to a space. They can be especially effective in kitchens and bathrooms where they can reflect light and make the space feel brighter and more open.
- Use mirrors to enhance lighting. Mirrors can enhance the lighting in a room by reflecting light and making the space feel brighter. To maximize this effect, place mirrors near light sources like lamps or sconces.
- Add a mirrored ceiling. A mirrored ceiling can add drama and glamour to a space, especially in a dining room or bedroom. A mirrored ceiling can also create the illusion of more space and make the room feel larger.
When incorporating mirrors into a space, it’s important to consider the placement and size of the mirrors. Too many mirrors or mirrors that are too large can overwhelm a space and create a disjointed feel. It’s also important to consider the surrounding decor and ensure that the mirrors complement the overall aesthetic of the space. Incorporating mirrors into a space is a versatile and effective way to add both functionality and aesthetic appeal!
Rugs & Layering
February 21, 2023
Rugs are an essential element in any interior design project. They can transform a space by adding color, texture, and pattern. However, choosing the right rug and placing it correctly can be challenging. Let’s explore some DO’S and DONT’S!
………………………………
DO: Consider the size and shape of the rug
Before selecting a rug, it’s crucial to consider the size and shape of the room. A rug that is too small can make a space feel cramped, while a rug that is too large can overwhelm the room. A general rule of thumb is to leave at least 18 inches of space between the rug and the wall to create a border. In terms of shape, a rectangular rug works best in a rectangular room, while a round rug can soften the angles of a square or rectangular room.
DO: Choose the right material
The material of the rug is also an important consideration. Natural fibers like wool and silk are durable and easy to clean, making them ideal for high-traffic areas. However, if you have pets or young children, a synthetic material like nylon or polyester may be a better choice as they are more stain-resistant.
DO: Layer rugs for added texture
Layering rugs is a popular trend in interior design. This technique involves placing two or more rugs on top of each other to create texture and visual interest. To make sure the rugs complement each other, choose colors and patterns that are complementary or tonal.
DON’T: Choose a rug that clashes with the furniture
When selecting a rug, it’s important to consider the other elements in the room, such as the furniture and wall color. A rug that clashes with the furniture can make the space feel disjointed. To avoid this, choose a rug that complements the existing color palette and style of the room.
DON’T: Place the rug in an awkward position
The placement of the rug is just as important as the size and shape. Avoid placing the rug in an awkward position that will make it difficult to walk around or block the flow of the room. If you have a large rug, it’s best to position it so that it sits under the front legs of the furniture.
By following these DO’S and DONT’S, you can select and place the right rug to transform your space. Remember to consider the size and shape of the rug, choose the right material, layer for added texture, and avoid clashing with the furniture and placing the rug in an awkward position.
Dried Flowers
February 9, 2023
Dried flowers have become an essential component in interior design, bringing a touch of natural beauty and timeless elegance to any space. Unlike fresh flowers that eventually wilt and die, dried flowers can last for years, making them a cost-effective and low-maintenance way to incorporate florals into your decor. With an array of colors, textures, and shapes to choose from, dried flowers can be used in a variety of styles, from bohemian to rustic to modern. Whether displayed in a vase, arranged in a bouquet, or suspended from the ceiling, dried flowers add a unique touch to any room and can instantly transform an ordinary space into a breathtaking, natural wonderland.
Pro tip for drying flowers at home: the best way to dry flowers is to hang them upside down in a well-ventilated, cool and dark place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. To do this, you can tie the stems together with a rubber band and hang them in a dry and airy spot, such as a closet or attic. Alternatively, you can also lay the flowers out on a flat surface, such as newspaper or paper towels, and let them air dry for a few days. Regardless of the method you choose, make sure to handle the flowers gently to avoid crushing or damaging them, and be patient, as drying times can vary depending on the type of flower and the humidity levels in your environment.
Wall Art
February 1, 2023
Wall art is a powerful tool in interior design, capable of transforming a room in minutes. From canvas prints to wall murals, the options for wall art are endless and can add depth, color, and texture to a space. In this post, we’ll explore how wall art can enhance your home décor and tips for selecting the right pieces for your home.
- Create a focal point: Wall art can serve as a focal point in a room, drawing the eye and anchoring the space. Consider selecting a large piece of art that reflects your personal style and tastes, and placing it over a sofa or mantel. A bold piece of art can make a statement, while more subtle pieces can create a calming and soothing atmosphere.
- Match your style: When choosing wall art, consider the style of your home. If you have a minimalist aesthetic, opt for simple, clean-lined pieces. If you prefer a more eclectic style, mix and match pieces from different eras and genres. You can also consider selecting pieces that complement the color scheme of the room.
- Play with scale: Scale is an important factor when selecting wall art. A small piece can look lost on a large wall, while a large piece can overwhelm a small space. Consider the scale of the room, the height of the ceilings, and the furniture when selecting wall art.
- Use groupings: Wall art can also be used to create groupings, adding visual interest and balancing a room. Consider arranging several smaller pieces in a grouping or creating a gallery wall with a collection of favorite pieces.
- Experiment with materials: In addition to traditional canvas and framed art, consider using different materials to add texture and interest. Metal sculptures, tapestries, and carved wooden pieces can all make beautiful additions to a room.
In conclusion, wall art is a versatile tool in interior design that can elevate a space in a variety of ways. Whether you’re looking to create a focal point, match your style, play with scale, use groupings, or experiment with materials, there is a wall art solution to suit your needs. With these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to creating a beautiful and personalized home décor.
Literature Nursery Elements
February 3, 2023
It is essential to consider the various elements that make up a room. One such element that is often overlooked but can play a significant role in the overall design and feel of a nursery is literature. Whether it’s children’s books, fairy tales, or nursery rhymes, incorporating literature into a nursery can enhance the space and provide benefits for both children and parents.
By including books in a nursery, children are exposed to the world of literature from a young age. This can foster a love of reading that can continue into adulthood, helping to develop critical thinking skills, expand vocabulary, and improve overall literacy.
Children’s books are often filled with colorful illustrations and imaginative stories that can inspire a child’s imagination. A nursery that incorporates literature can encourage children to explore their own imagination and creativity, fostering a love of learning and play.
Literature can also enhance the aesthetic of the room. Children’s books come in various sizes, colors, and styles, making it easy to find books that complement the overall design of the nursery. A well-curated book collection can add depth, texture, and interest to a space, making it feel more cozy and inviting.
